How Can You Tell If You Aren’t Getting Enough Sleep?
Although we don’t completely understand the biological reason for sleep, we do know that sleep is absolutely necessary for a healthy lifestyle. We also know that many vital processes go on within the body during a normal sleep cycle.
For example, at certain times during the sleep cycle, a hormone called growth hormone increases. This is absolutely vital for children and young adults, because this helps the body grow.
In addition to that, the amount of blood flow to the brain increases during sleep, replenishing oxygen and nutrients to the nervous system to prepare you for the next day. It’s no wonder that many of the side effects of a lack of sleep have to do with mental clarity. Issues such as “foggy” thinking and depression can be explained by this one factor alone.
Also, most of the healing that takes place within the body occurs while you sleep. At certain times during the sleep cycle, the body temperature will rise, which kills off viruses and bacteria to protect the body from illness.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults require 7 – 8 hours of sleep per night. Children, on the other hand, require more sleep than adults. Babies need 16 – 18 hours every day, while preschool aged children require 10 – 12 hours per day. Teenagers need at least 9 hours of sleep.

So, how can you tell if you aren’t getting enough sleep? The best sign is obvious – you feel drowsy during the day.
Another important thing to look at is your overall health. If you feel like you lead a healthy lifestyle, but you still have health problems that can’t be explained, you may be suffering from sleep deprivation.
You would be surprised at the problems that can develop within the body when you aren’t getting enough sleep. High blood pressure, heart conditions, and problems with the nervous system are just a few.
If you feel that sleep is a problem for you, it’s a good idea to have a sleep study done. This is a test that your doctor orders, where you spend the night in the hospital and they monitor your sleep. It’s painless, but a lot can be determined by these tests.
